Why Wood
Wood is still the most popular fence material in Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill — and for good reason. A well-built pressure-treated wood privacy fence gives you full 6-ft privacy, a warm natural look that blends with any landscaping, and the lowest entry price of any privacy fence material. It's the right choice for most Triangle backyards where you want to define your yard, contain pets and kids, and create a private outdoor space without spending vinyl or aluminum prices.
North Carolina's climate is hard on wood — hot humid summers, occasional ice storms, heavy spring rain, and red-clay soil that holds moisture against posts. That's exactly why every fence we install uses ground-contact rated pressure-treated Southern Yellow Pine for posts, rails and pickets, with all posts set in concrete below the local frost line. The result is a fence built for the Triangle, not a generic spec sheet — one that holds up for 15–25 years with minimal maintenance.
We install wood fences across the Triangle for new homeowners enclosing their first yard, families adding a second fence for a pool or dog run, and longtime residents replacing 20-year-old fences that have finally aged out. Every quote includes a real on-site walk of your property, transparent line-item pricing, and a written scope so you know exactly what you're paying for before we start.
Styles
We install every common wood privacy style in the Triangle. The right choice usually comes down to budget, how much privacy you want, and how the fence will look from the street.
Our most popular style — 6-ft pressure-treated pickets with classic 45° trimmed tops. Solid privacy, clean lines, and the best value for backyards. From $35/LF.
Alternating overlapping pickets on both sides of the rails — fully private even after seasonal wood movement. Thicker and longer-lasting than dog-ear. From $39/LF.
Alternating pickets on opposite sides of the rails — looks finished from both yards with airflow gaps. Ideal for hot, humid Triangle summers. From $40/LF.
A finished top rail (the 'cap') and trim board cleans up the silhouette and protects picket end-grain from water. The upgraded look. From $42/LF.
Standard is 6 feet, but we install 4-ft and 5-ft heights for pets, front yards, and HOA requirements. 8-ft privacy available on request.
Walk gates, double drive gates, and arched-top gates built to match your fence. Heavy-duty hinges and self-latching hardware included on every gate.
Installation Process
We come to your property, walk the fence line, listen to what you want, and email a written estimate — usually within 24 hours. No high-pressure sales call.
Once you approve the estimate, we call NC 811 to mark underground utilities. You confirm property lines, pull a survey if needed, and handle any HOA or permit requirements before we break ground.
Day 1 of installation. We dig 24–30 inch post holes below the frost line, set 4x4 ground-contact pressure-treated posts in concrete, and let them cure overnight.
Day 2. Rails are attached, pickets are installed plumb and consistent, gates are hung with heavy-duty hardware. Walk the fence with you before we leave.
We clean the site, haul off all debris, and walk the finished fence with you. You don't pay the balance until you're satisfied with the work.
Transparent Pricing
Triangle pricing typically runs $35–42/LF installed. Final pricing depends on style, gates, terrain, and site access.

WoodCommon Questions
A properly installed wood privacy fence using pressure-treated ground-contact lumber typically lasts 15 to 25 years in the North Carolina climate. The biggest factors are post installation depth (we set posts in concrete below frost line), wood grade, and whether the fence is sealed or stained every 2–3 years. Our pressure-treated Southern Yellow Pine is rated for ground contact and humid Southeastern conditions, which is what makes a 20-year service life realistic in Durham, Raleigh and Chapel Hill yards.
We build with #2 Grade or better Southern Yellow Pine, pressure-treated for ground contact and rated for the North Carolina climate. All posts are 4x4 ground-contact pressure-treated, rails are 2x4 pressure-treated, and pickets are 1x6 pressure-treated dog-ear (or your selected profile). Cedar and other premium woods are available on request, but pressure-treated Southern Yellow Pine offers the best longevity-to-price ratio for our humid, rainy climate.
A dog-ear fence has pickets butted edge-to-edge with the top corners trimmed at 45° — it's the classic Triangle backyard fence and the most affordable wood privacy option. A board-on-board fence uses alternating pickets that overlap on both sides of the rails, creating a thicker, more solid look with full privacy even as boards shrink over time. Board-on-board runs roughly $4–6 more per linear foot but is significantly more durable and less prone to gaps.
A shadowbox (or 'good neighbor') fence has alternating pickets on opposite sides of the rails, creating a fence that looks finished from both sides. It provides semi-privacy with airflow gaps between boards — great for hot Triangle summers and yards where you don't want a solid wall feel. Shadowbox fences also age more evenly because both sides see equal sun and weather.
Permit requirements vary by city. Raleigh generally requires a fence permit for fences over 6 feet or in front yards, while many Durham residential fence projects under 6 feet do not require a city permit. The homeowner is responsible for all required permits. We recommend confirming requirements with your local zoning office before installation begins.
A typical 150 linear-foot residential wood privacy fence project takes 2 working days. Day 1 is post-setting: we mark the line, dig 24–30 inch post holes, set 4x4 ground-contact posts in concrete, and let them cure. Day 2 is panels: rails and pickets are attached, gates are hung, and the site is cleaned up. Larger jobs (300+ LF) or fences with heavy gates and complex terrain may run 3–4 days.
Pressure-treated Southern Yellow Pine will last for years without any treatment — the chemical preservatives in ground-contact lumber are rated for decades of exposure. That said, applying a quality oil-based stain or sealer every 2–3 years dramatically extends the life of the fence, reduces cupping and splitting, and keeps it looking new. We recommend waiting 6–12 months after installation before the first stain so the wood can fully dry.
Yes — every quote includes the gates you need. Standard 4-foot walk gates use heavy-duty hinges and a self-latching latch. Double drive gates (typically 8–12 feet wide) are available for driveway and side-yard access, with drop rods and commercial-grade hinges sized for the gate weight. We also build matching gate frames so the gate is indistinguishable from the rest of the fence line.
